As VFX Artists, we know how tedious it can be to get a flat grid from a loopy, windy mesh.
Here's a technique we use in Maya to make the process more painless!
How to Create UV Map Trail Meshes in Maya
Here's how to do it in a way that's quick and painless!
- Select your trail mesh, Open the UV Editor and hit Modify -> Unitize
- Select All of the edges in your trail then Ctrl-Double-Click any of the outside edges to deselect just the border.
- Hit Cut / Sew -> Stitch Together
- Optionally grab your entire UV Hull and hit Modify -> Normalize to make it 0-1
And that's it!
