Celebrating Pride Month At Beyond-FX

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month takes place throughout June to honor the Stonewall Uprising. The liberation movement and subsequent riots began on June 28th, 1969, in Manhattan. 

Here at Beyond-FX, we are celebrating the achievements and recognizing the successes of members of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially those in the video game industry. We’re using the month to highlight some games we particularly love, which are perfect for Pride and are beautifully made. Plus, this has been a perfect opportunity to drop into some underrated and beloved titles that we can’t get enough of, with the excuse of calling it work!

Celeste (2018)

‍

Beyond-FX’s first stream, as part of our Beyond-FX Arcade: Let’s Play series, took place on Monday, June 3rd. Julian and Jes played through Celeste, a title platformed for its nuanced exploration of mental health, stunning visual style, and inventive platform gaming mechanics. 

Developed and published by Maddy Makes Games and directed by the talented Maddy Thorson of TowerFall fame, this exquisite title is instantly accessible and intuitive to play. Celeste is well worth playing for its gorgeous score and retro vibes at the very least and is available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Linux, Microsoft Windows, macOS, Xbox One, and Mac operating systems.

Hades (2020)

Our second entry into the Pride Month Beyond-FX Arcade: Let’s Play series came as we played Hades on Wednesday, June 5th. Julian and Jes leaped into this Greek mythology retelling, playing as Zagreus, prince of the Underworld. 

Developed and published by Supergiant Games, it’s no surprise that the deep and ambitious roguelike action RPG recently received a sequel. Utterly compelling and graphically rich, Hades is available on macOS, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Boyfriend Dungeon (2021)

Next up on our playlist is Boyfriend Dungeon, which was streamed on Twitch on June 10th where Jes and Becka had a lot of fun showcasing the title. The dungeon crawler doubles as a dating simulation in a hybrid gaming style that’s as heavy on the storytelling as it is on the hard-hitting action. 

Developed and published by Kitfox Games, Boyfriend Dungeon boasts a customizable lead with personalized pronouns and countless monster encounters in dungeons formed from the lead’s anxieties. Boyfriend Dungeon is available on Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator (2017)

On June 18th, Beyond-FX will play Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator, a visual novel video game packed with minigames and critical choices. This interactive title is fun and vibrant and contains 7 romance options! 

Developed and published by Game Grumps, Dream Daddy contains compelling writing and a few notable twists on a familiar format. It’s currently available on Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.

Supporting The Community 

Want to support the community during Pride Month or throughout the rest of the year? Well, we’ve got your back. While you can absolutely do your own research and contribute to platforms that you connect with, we’ve made your job a little easier and collated a list of great LGBTQIA+ organizations to donate to, volunteer with, or generally assist.

The Trevor Project

‍

The Trevor Project focuses on suicide prevention among the LGBTQIA+ community, predominantly in under 25s, and provides support, guidance, and crisis intervention. Their services include a free 24/7 helpline, digital chats, texting, and trained counseling.

Trans Lifeline

‍

Trans Lifeline was the first transgender crisis hotline to exist in the US and Canada and is a non-profit organization that continues to provide emotional and financial support to members of the transgender community.

Qweerty Gamers

‍

Dedicated to promoting visibility, awareness, and opportunities for LGBTQIA+ people in the gaming industry, Qweerty Gamers provides chances to network and curate useful resources to progress through the space.

It Gets Better 

‍

It Gets Better has created a mission statement to empower young people to tell their story and change the world enough to show them that things really will get better. Starting as a social media campaign, this idea has now grown far beyond its inspirational origins.
